Discovered today that Gnome 49+ removed X11 and only works with Wayland. Wayland still has a bunch of compatibility issues, so I guess my options are 1) stay on Gnome 48, 2) switch to something else :/ shame there is no choice any more to continue with Gnome. Thoughts?

Well, I tried to sign up to Claude Code today. Paid first subscription, and 2.5h later my account was suspended without any information π³ no clue why or what to do, and shortly after had an automated refund issued. Submitted some appeal form, but it does feel as if it goes to /dev/null - I thought AI was the future? π

Finally tore the plaster [band aid] off, and have moved the majority of my email stuff from Google to Fastmail today. Went pretty smoothly! I haven't found an ideal replacement for Google Tasks yet; as simple as it is, I really liked having tasks inline in my calendar, but @fastmail doesn't have that.

RE: https://phpc.social/@asgrim/116341154169598716 Had a discussion with some friends today about this cognitive dissonance I have with AI. Running AI on local machines only (i.e. no remote LLM usage) somewhat helps the first point; or at least distributes the issue. Maybe that is better? Unsure. But the second point still stands. Could that be overlooked, I wonder? A point was made that shit is stolen all over the place anyway, so morals have kinda gone out the window. I'm so confli...

It frustrates me more and more seeing people I know and respect fall into the AI con. Embracing AI ignores that: - AI is consuming vast amounts of electricity and water - Morally, it was trained on stolen content - It is has destabilised the storage/memory/hardware economy (at least temporarily) Any time anyone celebrates something they made with AI, I cannot help but think of those things, and how it is further plunging us into a terrible future in tech.

It's a little frustrating when CFPs you apply for don't respond with even just something quick to say "sorry, you weren't selected". e.g. I've got a lot of trips to organise, and when I apply to speak at a conference, I clear my calendar for that conference, so it's a bit rubbish for submitters to not let them know IMO π

LLMs are currently doing more harm than good. If the industry continues down its current trajectory, we're fucked. That is all.
-
Post #474349
It is somewhat reassuring to see, at least some of my fellow industry peers are seeing how atrocious and damaging LLMs are, and that many folks don't just want to let it be β€οΈ there is, perhaps, hope for humanity yet.
