I just realized that, if your main coding PC has a document scanner and OCR software, like a cheap flatbed and Tesseract for example, then you could, at least in theory, use a manual #typewriter in your favorite hideaway as the ultimate distraction-free code authoring tool. If your typewriter doesn't have a delete key, then take along a typewriter eraser and a writing correction tape.

It was a mistake to quit shipping computers and operating systems without even one hobbyist-oriented programming environment preinstalled &amp; featured. Even a dialect of BASIC, picking up where 8-bit ROM BASICs, GW-BASIC, and QBASIC left off, &amp; much more discoverable &amp; tinker-able than the WSH/VBScript buried deep in every version of Windows since 98, would&apos;ve been an improvement. At least then, explorers &amp; would-be hobbyists would have options instantly...

I just found out the hard way that FreeBSD effectively abandoned my Atom netbook starting with 14.3. The upgrade from the now-EOL 14.2 succeeded, except the drm, i915kms, and other kernel module friends were removed from the i386 pkg repos, &amp; graphics/drm-61-kmod, the only drm-kmod port, refuses to try building on i386. Looks like this is the end of the Unix-likes road for still fully working x86 PCs.

On a Dell Inspiron 518 running FreeBSD 14.4, it took 9 hours to install www/firefox from ports. On that same PC, it took 39.5 hours to build &amp; install www/qt6-webengine, a dependency of x11-fm/konqueror, from ports. TIFO it&apos;s because qt6-webengine bundles its own Chromium, &amp; despite being stripped down, it still took the better part of two days to compile.

Folks, if you&apos;re going to have a third-party antivirus/security program on your PC, then please keep it up to date. If you decide to let the subscription lapse, then uninstall it. With an expired subscription, security/antivirus programs are so much worse than useless. It refuses to work AND prevents the built-in Windows Defender from working.
