#FediHood is now available! Talk with people near you. A local chat on the #Fediverse where you share only your city, never your exact location. You adjust your timeline with distance and topic filters. It's in early beta and web only for now. It connects to the whole Fediverse, and you can send #E2EE DMs between FediHood and Holos users. The source code will be published soon. Don't hesitate to share! Instance: https://fedihood.social

#FediHood and #HolosSocial, two separate #Fediverse projects (that I maintain), can now send each other #E2EE DMs, fully over #ActivityPub.

Asking the #Fediverse: do you know if there's a #PeerTube channel that will publish the #Fedicon talks?

#Fedilab 3.43.1 has been published. This is a small release to fix the "Catte bomb". Don't open those threads without the fix, otherwise the app will freeze :) This release also fixes quotes in notifications where the CW couldn't be opened. I created #CastLab after coming back from holidays. I just wanted to cast my media to my TV and could not find a simple open source app for that, so I built one. It has grown since: it supports #Kodi and the open source #FCast protocol. I was even surprised to see it also used to cast music to network speakers. I will keep working on your feedback. Only on #FDroid, but it could be brought to #iOS if people are interested (through #AltStorePAL). https://f-droid.org/packages/app.fedilab.castlab

The latest release of #Fedilab clearly shows an improvement with OOM (out of memory) bugs. I won't call it a victory, but it's a clear improvement.

#Fedilab 3.43.0 is available! It now targets Android 16, with lower memory usage and better stability for long sessions. Timelines load faster with a large cache, and you can set how long cached posts are kept. Also fixed: voice recording, audio picker, animated GIFs, push on non-Mastodon software, account switching crashes and more. Full release notes: https://codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/releases/tag/3.43.0

I moved the #HolosSocial projects (app, relay and discover, to stay consistent) to my own git at https://git.holos.social/tom79 As a reminder about this choice: I used an AI to write part of the #Holos docs, and also to review and help me fix some code I had written. At first I didn't feel concerned by the debate (no vibe coding on my side), but it went further than that. Out of respect for everyone using my work, transparency and action were needed. #Fedilab isn't affected and stays o...

Today, I spent a long time trying to understand why the in-app translator using #LibreTranslate was still being abused. I took drastic measures, because legit translations were stuck in the queue behind the abusers (now they are quick). But these measures also kicked out people using the API without abusing it. So please DM us if you're affected. Tom

RE: https://toot.fedilab.app/@apps/116981481074984752 There are three ways to get #Fedilab beta releases: - The beta channel on Google Play, by opting in from the app description - #FDroid through our custom repo https://fdroid.fedilab.app - The APK attached to the release notes PS: all these APKs are signed by me. If you have an F-Droid version, you first need to export your data in settings, remove the app (due to the signature mismatch), install, then import your previous data from the log...

@HurricaneWeasel@mastodon.world joined the #Fedilab account at @apps@toot.fedilab.app. You might already know him, he's the same person managing issues on #Codeberg. His help with the account will be really valuable to me. The idea is to better handle issues reported on the #Fediverse and in our repo. When we post, we'll try as much as possible to sign our messages. So, welcome Marco and thank you! Tom

#Fedilab 3.43.0-beta-1 has been published in the dev channel. This release now targets Android 16, which is why I'm releasing it as a beta first. To beta testers: could you check that you don't have any layout issues with this version? Thanks! Release notes: https://codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/releases/tag/3.43.0-beta-1

#HolosDiscover has an issue with accents that I'll fix ASAP. For instance, searching for "Androïd" returns far fewer results than "Android". In case you can't see the difference, the letter "i" has a diaeresis (tréma) in the first word.

I'll soon publish a beta release of #Fedilab with several fixes: - IPv4 fallback when IPv6 fails (mostly over WiFi, with an infinite loader) - Cache improvements (faster loads even with a heavy cache) - Memory leak fixes The target version will also be Android 16, which removed the edge-to-edge opt-out that Fedilab used.

Recent reports I received for #Fedilab were mostly about OOM (out of memory) bugs. I re-enabled LeakCanary to track them down and fixed four leaks that kept the app holding onto memory while navigating between activities. People who never kill the app may have run into those crashes. The next release should be more stable.

RE: https://toot.fedilab.app/@apps/116970784475112417 #HolosDiscover is a kind of search engine for the #Fediverse, fully working with #ActivityPub. That means it doesn't scrape content, it receives it organically. As soon as a post is deleted, it's removed from the index. The same goes for edits. If an account opts out, everything is removed from the index. It only indexes public posts from followed accounts that have the indexable flag turned on (locked accounts are excluded). More...

I've started improving #Fedilab, especially some old annoying bugs, such as issues with certain instances not working over WiFi, or the app being slow to load timelines due to too much cache. I recently got some reports, but most of them are missing the attachment (crash report). That's my fault: the ACRA lib is outdated. After that, I'll start fixing the issues reported on Codeberg.

Summer is the worst season for animals. As the holidays get closer, shelters fill with pets left behind. My cat and dog came from there. Haru (the cat) waited two years in a shelter, and our dog (Tanos) is one a relative could no longer keep. A black cat and a malinois, now sharing the same stairs. Out of conviction, I built https://pawfed.org/how-it-works, a service working with #ActivityPub and #OSM. It is not the perfect solution, but if you can help your local shelter, please do.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@HolosSocial/116937094959319831 While most of you know my main account for #Fedilab, months ago I wanted to work on something new. Being able to publish this code in production is an important step for me. Yes, it is possible to run an #ActivityPub server on your phone, with #E2EE DMs and a portable identity. And you are no longer tied to a single model like text, media or video. No need for separate apps: one account does it all, and you switch in one tap. Only your...

#ActivityPub carries posts, follows, likes and so on, but not moderation. A ban stays trapped on the instance that issued it. So, for instance, an account banned for racism on one instance stays unknown to the next. Moderation is activity too, and it should travel like the rest: signed and verifiable. This is a real problem, and others have explored it already. I will look into what already exists and see what we could build on for #HolosSocial.

A hypothetical about chat control and #HolosSocial Say a law one day required client-side scanning. The relay only ever sees encrypted data, so a scan would catch nothing. To read content, it must run in the client, before encryption. A closed client could add it silently in an update. An open one cannot: the code is public, anyone can recompile without it. Would an open source #E2EE messenger on the #Fediverse like Holos be breaking the law if it did nothing? I am not sure. Your opinion?

#HolosDiscover is a search engine dedicated to the #Fediverse. It does not scrape content, because it speaks #ActivityPub and respects each user's choice to opt in or out. The most respectful alternative, open to all and full of content to explore. https://discover.holos.social

Working on open source apps is a big challenge. Everything is made possible through your bug reports, your feedback, and also your financial contributions, which is for me the hardest part to talk about. They cover the server costs, and they also help me in my daily life. If you appreciate my work and can help me on #Liberapay or #Kofi, here are the links. Thank you for your support. #HolosSocial relay is confirmed to be very stable. I will officially tag it soon so admins can run their own relay with a script to easily install it on their VPS. Using Holos with a custom domain and a cloud for media allows you to own your portable identity on the #Fediverse. Relays become only an infrastructure for it. Your device runs the #ActivityPub server and works as smoothly as any other app. Micro-blogging, media, and video, all from a single account. Switch with a simple tap.

On holiday, I had the chance to reproduce an issue with IPv6 and #Fedilab. It all happened through a WiFi repeater: the app got stuck on each start because IPv6 was available but not routable. I used this opportunity to fix it and let the app gracefully fall back to IPv4 when it happens.

I talked about an Open Source AI solution to describe media. But what about audio that writes the text for you? When a description is missing, it lets you speak, writes the text for you, and you confirm. Would you like this in #Fedilab?

Recently I told you about the offline translator available on #FDroid. https://f-droid.org/packages/dev.davidv.translator Currently, translating opens the translator app. The idea is to keep everything inside #Fedilab: the translated text comes straight back into the post, so you never leave the app. You do not even notice it used another app in the background. It is already done in #HolosSocial, and I will add it to Fedilab.

RE: https://toot.fedilab.app/@apps/116863035752776023 I will add this feature, but it will of course need an opt-in action in the settings. The app cannot filter content without prior consent.
