This month #slowBookClub read Angela Y. Davis's Are Prisons Obsolete? I highly recommend it, it's short, it's clear and well-written, and it has a great chapter on 'what do we do instead?' I was put off by the word "Obsolete" in the title. Partly it felt like if you're going to make one argument against it in the title, "old-fashioned" is not that convincing of one. But the way she threads the history of how we got here and the question of where we g...

#slowBookClub will return Tuesday Sept 8, at 6p Pacific. We're reading Fight Like Hell, The Untold History of American Labor, by Kim Kelly. It has 65 chapters, so we'll take it in 3 chunks. For Part 1, please read the first 22 chapters or at least some of them. Slow Book Club is on jitsi and open to anyone who is interested! we have a small core group, but we've had up to 7 or 8 people at some of the earlier meetings - and it's gone well. #pdx Here's my current favorite win for #RSS - this popped up in my reader: https://www.portland.gov/arts/news/2026/5/12/color-our-city-help-paint-asphalt-art-new-cultural-district-plaza a chance to signup for a free event to help paint a giant mural in downtown #portland! Slots are only 1 hour, snacks are free, family friendly event. Saturday, July 11 I grabbed 2 tickets for the 1pm slot, and hope to take Mx19 for some quality hang out time. Would love to see some familiar faces! An...

#meMadeMay got a photo today! This is maybe the second or third item i made several years ago when i got serious about sewing. It was supposed to have another tier of skirt, but i got narrower fabric than the pattern wanted. It also was enormous on me, so i simply safety pin tested taking in the straps and sides and then hand sewed so that it fit better. Many problems, but still summer wearable! And a woman rolled down her car window today to tell me she likes it. It has pockets.

Our next #pdxFedi meetup will be Saturday May 30, at Peninsula Park, from 2p-4p. We'll meet up near the gazebo, in the shade to the north west. (same place as today) If you can, bring a camp chair. There are also some steps to sit on and a water fountain. We seem to have become people who bring snacks to share too - no obligation, but you're welcome to bring something to share. There was some talk of maybe trying to play games? and a little juggling lesson! Hope all you loc...

I am really enjoying watching The Pitt through the medium of Tumblr fandom. I have 0 interest in seeing the actual show. But I think I have a favorite little guy. I think his name is Whitaker? media is very odd these days.

#knitting what are your favorite resources for learning magic loop? especially variations that avoid laddering. bonus: ... how do I use stitch markers? do I just slide them onto the needle and hope everything works out later? if there's a getting started resource for these as well, I kind of need it.

I made a tube! First in-the-round piece - used a variation on magic loop. I used yarn i didn’t like much, and thus have a not very soft output. But it was an experiment and i didn’t want to use the good yarn on the first try. #Knitting
