Reviewing conference talk proposals is wild in the age of LLMs, and exhausting in ways that it never was in the past. Never knowing if what you read was directly from the mind of a human, “touched up” by an LLM, or fabricated whole cloth by a stochastic lying machine. Low effort proposals in the past were frequently just a couple sentences and nothing else, but now “low effort” can also produce hundreds or thousands of words for reviewers to sift through. Proposals *about* LLMs take it to th...

RE: https://social.northbaypython.org/@NorthBayPython/115861794229890398 As you head into the weekend, think about sharing something cool with all the excellent folks who attend North Bay Python. I know you all have some amazing talk ideas banging around — I’ve been on committees for half a dozen conferences by now — but NBPy is literally the coolest possible venue to give that talk at. And we have the best, funniest, and most engaged audience imaginable. We want to hear your ideas. Yes, even...

Yesterday was my last day at Astral, as the acquisition by OpenAI closed. It's unfortunate that my time there was short, but I'm proud of what I've accomplished: - New "range suppression" system for Ruff, better than "noqa", that can cover multiline statements with a leading comment, or entire blocks of code: https://docs.astral.sh/ruff/linter/#comments - Markdown code block formatting, enabling Ruff to format Python code in your docu...

98% of ticket purchasers actually claimed a badge, and the one other person had a good excuse [shows an x-ray of a fractured bone]. 👏 #NBPy

“The impact of a system is what we continue to allow”, a better corollary to the problematic “purpose of a system is what it does” coined by @amcasari@hachyderm.io at #NBPy

Might be a long shot, but does anyone know a real human I could commission to write a short story in the Catalan/Valencian language? Bonus points if they are queer/adjacent.

We did it! Y'all are absolutely amazing, and together we've matched $17,000, for a total of $34k raised for @ThePSF! A personal thank you to everyone who donated, and an extra heap of thanks and gratitude to @glyph for organizing and managing all of this. And of course, thank you again to every single person at the PSF, and all of the board members, for being a model of ethics for the rest of the world! :python: https://mastodon.social/@glyph/115493527623089000
