Very very hot today. It will feel like 39°C. Stay safe, in the shade, and hydrated. Things will cool off by the weekend. #portalberni #heatwave #bcstorm

my station is currently mostly in the shade due to changes in the backyard. So this is definitely an under-count on the temperature from Alberniweather. high of 35.6°C at Alberniweather Heat Index of 37.2 official high of 34.9°C at the Alberni Airport. Humidex of 38 (Heat Index is used in the USA, Humidex is Canadian... for some reason my station isn't calculating Humidex right now. Havent been able to diagnose why) #bcstorm #weather #portalberni

lightning creeping up from Nahmint Lake to our south. Going to be an interesting day. Don't count the heat out yet eirher. if we get a break in the clouds we could still heat up fast to 30°C #bcstorm

significant cluster of lightning near Franklin River junction on the Bamfield/Nitinat/PortAlberni/Cowichan road. starting to hear the rumbles. Keep an eye out for wildfire smoke today and the next day or two. But hopefully the rain this weekend will help take care of anything. #bcstorm #portalberni #bcwildfire

RE: https://mastodon.social/@sharponlooker/116970123686920041 Looks like Port Alberni is *just* south of the partial eclipse. The north of Vancouver Island will see a sliver. The total eclipse is through Spain.

RE: https://fediscience.org/@hausfath/117015135074717415 Zeke Hausfather is one of the most prominent El Niño experts out there. He mentions the Canadian models today. The old record of 2.8°C above average in the oceanic region could be as high as 3.6°C and 4.2°C by November. Record shattering. Given that this peak is occurring in November this, including the ongoing buildup happening right now (it is already at or near the 2.8°C record) could have large impacts on fall and winter 2026, as...

It will never not boggle my mind that the little box under my basement stairs can detect an earthquake 4000km away!! These are the 7.3 and 6.0 quakes in Mexico this morning. #mexico #shakenet #raspberryShake #earthquake #mexico

Looks like #bcwildfire smoke is settling into the Valley this evening :( Our run of clear air has ended. The current PM2.5 readings from around the Valley and Island can be seen on the Air Quality page on https://www.alberniweather.ca You can see the smoke in the valley on the West webcam. Currently not bad, but I expect readings to rise tonight and tomorrow morning as temperatures cool overnight. #airquality #climateChange
