"Now, with the authorities increasingly on the hunt for Starlink terminals, Sahand and his network are advising users to use VPNs with the satellite technology in order to remain incognito. But many people cannot afford it, particularly at a time of economic crisis." People really need better satellite access safety advice in Farsi. The VPN will just hide your ip from the destination, not how you got on the internet. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cvgzk91leweo

RightsCon would have started today but China used its authority in Zambia to block it. Currently in an event that switched to online, but the reality that the world is shrinking for pro-democracy and rights-based civil society collaboration is just fact. https://andrewfordlyons.net/2026/05/01/something-broke-in-lusaka.html

It's amazing that there are still organisations that think they need to buy up ever permutation of their name in domains as a way of thwarting imitators. It's a really expensive and fruitless thing to do and throwing away cash that could really be doing better work elsewhere.

The White House is engaging in market manipulation and insider trading but since it de facto runs Congress and the SEC what would be the levers to do anything about that? https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cge0grppe3po

RE: https://mastodon.social/@magdelenehall/116372827462467658 You're always building for what the next team gets to use. Consider what people with the opposite morality, ethics or vision that you have would do with it.

AI can take all the serious jobs and do whatever with them if we can just have these kinds of opportunities in exchange.

"Trump and Hegseth have been on a clear mission to politicize the U.S. military, and to turn it into an armed extension of the MAGA movement. Hegseth regularly proselytizes, both for Trump and for his right-wing evangelical beliefs, from the Pentagon podium." https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/2026/04/hegseths-war-on-americas-military/686676/?gift=otEsSHbRYKNfFYMngVFweOjqTICKuzNh9QyRxzLxl1I&utm_source=copy-link&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=share

"“So much of our past has been shaped by this petty proceduralism. You could draw a straight line between an amendment in Brussels and a mass grave in Kazakhstan.” — Molly Crabapple, ‘Here Where We Live is Our Country’" A lot of banging great lines in this book!
