Moving to a new country is hard. I knew that going in, intellectually, and I find that experientially it's still true. I've been so focused on getting initial stability here in #Halifax that I haven't had the capacity to start connecting with community here. Now that it's warming up and people have outdoor opportunities to connect ( #CovidIsntOver ), and since class it out for the summer, I'm trying to focus on community. As a #SolarPunk, I think that comm...

I just finished reading Neon Riders by @AEMarling and what a ride (pun intended)! Imagining a #SolarPunk future is difficult, and one of the most difficult aspects of that future to imagine is how we conceptualize justice and how we treat those who do harm. Then there was a group-of-threes activity where we had a scenario like "it hasn't ra...

Today's #SolarPunk update: I worked in the urban garden this morning. We had the most volunteers for a workday so far this year, got a lot of watering and fertilizing done, got rid of some invasives, and set up a cold frame for the peas. I took home a handful of oregano plus a potted oregano plant, along with some other herbs that I dropped off at the community pantry. We talked about doing some collaborations with the other urban garden that I met with on Friday, as well as some of the...

I am downloading the OpenAlex bibliometric dataset with the intention to shove it into PostgreSQL and run queries. Is this what my bibliometrics professor has in mind? No. Is it easier than picking a different research problem? Also no. But will going the extra mile to manipulate the data at this low and thorough level be reflected in the marks I receive on the assignment? No. Will I use this opportunity to critique the lack of expressiveness in bibliographic database query tools? Maybe, it does...
