  Every time someone tries to say AI is the next big thing in tech and we need to get used to it I mention betamax. That was touted as the next big thing too and it never went anywhere. History is littered with inventions that failed to gain traction for one reason or another

  On the list of failed inventions we have those single use DVD rentals. You rent the DVD, open the special packaging and within three days a special coating eats through one of the layers making them unreadable. Touted as an easy return free rental method it died as quickly as it appeared.
