  @_thegeoff the DSN is a set of radio telescopes on the surface of the earth. There are no DSN relays in space. So, when they are behind the moon no radio signals can be received by DSN.

  @_thegeoff the big problem is that the signals received by the DSN are weak. The DSN radio telescopes are like 18 meters in diameter. They’re huge so the can pick up these weak signals among all the background EM noise from space.

  @joethephish I have used a similar camera for taking pictures of space (from the surface of earth). You often see defective pixels that show up bright or “hot” on a mostly black background. They are always there but not noticeable in regular photography. It could also be cosmic ray strikes on the camera chip.

  @michaelharley I’ve read all the books in that series and I feel the second one is the weakest. So if you don’t like the second one keep going. They are great!
