Is it conceivable that printed books and encyclopaedias from before AI may become quite sought after and valuable as reliable sources of information in the near future?

This is a persuasive and insightful analysis of the disaster that is British politics at the moment. Thanks @Tupp_ed https://www.thegist.ie/the-gist-britain-the-ungoverned-country/

Lesson learnt — turning a research paper into a talk is easy, but the reverse, turning a talk into a research paper, is much harder and almost impossible!

This Europe day one has to admit that while far from perfect, looking at the rest of the world, the EU seems pretty good. Happy to be able to say "Civis Europaeus sum".

Open science friends and colleagues, please follow the Federation of European Academies of Sciences and Humanities (European to be interpreted broadly as in membership of the Council of Europe - more than the EU). @ALLEA #OpenScience #SciencePolicy #ResearchIntegrity #IntellectualProperty #ScienceEducation

Sad to hear of the death of the mathematician David Wilkins from TCD - he did interesting work on the history of mathematics and was a talented amateur musician. https://www.maths.tcd.ie/pub/HistMath/ #Mathematics

An unintended but positive side effect of the rise of AI and LLMs is that it may accelerate the long overdue reform of research assessment. If the "journals" are flooded with slop academia will be forced to take DORA seriously. #ResearchAssessment #COARA

RE: https://mstdn.ca/@asiny/116290692710908105 Helium is an incredibly valuable resource that we manage very badly. Although the second most abundant element in the universe, on Earth it only occurs trapped in rocks as a result of alpha decay of radioactive elements. Once it enters the atmosphere it is so light that it diffuses out into space and is lost. We need to conserve it as much as possible.

I do wish the media would stop talking about the cost of energy when what they really mean is the cost of fossil fuel energy. Renewables are and remain cheap.
