Cats: ::fight:: Me: Stop! (Thirty seconds later) Cats: ::fight:: Me: Stop!! Look, Raki, here is your favorite toy. Play with this instead! (Thirty seconds later) Cats: ::fight:: Me: ::stomps over to put someone in time out:: Raki: ::guiltily looks up at me, bats at his favorite toy hopefully:: He did not get put in time out, and he did proceed to play with his toy (a plastic spring) instead that time.

This Mother’s Day I realized I lost my mother 23 years ago, at age 23. It’s been half my life.

Ouzo annual vet day! First of all I checked in by saying I had Raki. They were like “oh no we booked the wrong cat!” but I quickly admitted it was my bad, I did bring Ouzo. Hah. Clean bill of health, he’s fussy and growly at the (cats only) vet because of all the other cat smells, but if you put churu in front of him he’ll let them do everything they need to do. Came home, let him out in the hallway, ran back out for the mail, went to grab the carrier, and nearly dropped it. Raki was inside!

#caturday update. When they tried to share this windowsill yesterday it immediately devolved into fighting. This morning, they got along. I’ve noticed good strides lately - Raki is no longer biting as his first signal that he’s done with pets, which is nice. He’s also getting better at not immediately trying to wrestle Ouzo the moment the lights go out at night, so we haven’t had to separate them at night as much. He still gets up at 6am and tries it at that point though. It’s progress.

In non-cat news, getting into tomato season. It’ll be warm enough for these to be outside for at least half a week. I don’t like raw tomatoes but my spouse does, and in past years my stepmother started trays of black cherry tomatoes for her raised bed and gave me a couple to grow on my porch. Now my parents live in a condo, and she can only keep what she can fit on her porch. The three big ones here are hers while she’s out of town, the other two are my attempts to start my own.

Raki just let us sleep through the night! I just woke HIM up because I had to pee! There was a round of zoomies at 4 AM that I half listened to in case of fighting, but there was none! I had both cats sandwiched around me for a while! It’s a miracle!

My work computer updated Office products and suddenly Copilot was there. I managed to take it off the list of programs that open on startup; we’ll see if it stays off. Meanwhile my boss lectured me because I came up on a list of people who have never signed into our corporate ChatGPT license. He went on for 20 minutes before letting me get a word in edgewise. It wasn’t all bad (“I can see why you might not be interested, you’re someone who processes information quickly”).

I saw this cat scratcher bed plus toys at Costco for $9-something. Raki’s been really into the flat scratcher since I put it out (in an attempt to remind him not to scratch the couch), even sleeping on it, so I figured he’d like this. He came up, went “meh,” and sat on the old one. Ouzo, meanwhile, asks why I haven’t gotten one of these for him years ago. (In reality, I got him an S shaped one when we got him, but it kept tipping over and he rejected it.)

Got a set of resumes for a position I’m hiring for. (I hired someone! After six weeks she quit! I swear I’m not a bad boss!) (She actually had a family emergency that required her moving back home, internationally.) One resume surprised me because it was eight pages long. Turns out two full pages of it was dedicated to keywords of various accounting “skills”, clearly to get through an AI screener. She also listed her two degrees eight different ways.

I found some can light retrofit bulbs at Costco for cheap and woo they look so much nicer! Plus the old CFL bulbs we had up here always had to warm up for several minutes before the room stopped looking dark. I need to go back for more, I only bought one box to make sure they’d work. As it turns out, half of my can lights are 5” and half are 7”, which is REALLY ANNOYING. Luckily I’d previously replaced the kitchen cans so I know what brand will work, and these will work for the small ones.
