The advancements in hardware have been dramatic since I entered my programs composed in FORTRAN, put them on punch cards, and ran them on a Cray 1 in NSA’s basement in 1976. Now I carry a powerful computer in my pocket, and it’s even got a camera! When the Internet came along I remember the optimism that this would be an opportunity for everyone to connect to anyone around the world. Sadly we failed to anticipate the effects of capitalism on this new medium. In many ways I consider the Internet...

I resurrected my old ASUS K501J laptop, which for some reason I updated to Windows 10 last year. Bad move. It only has 4MB of RAM. Megabytes. I should either wipe the drive and install Windows 7 (I have an upgrade disc, will that work?) or try to find a Linux distro that can run on air.

Every time I see pups taken from their mother for adoption or juvenile apes removed from their family group to be relocated, I can’t help but wonder how we’d feel if a “superior” race did that to us. I know it’s often done for good reasons, but we know that, they don’t.

No good whatsoever will come from the proliferation of data centers. There are no positive or beneficial long term gains to be had. They will serve only the oligarch’s, the wealthy and powerful. Data is valuable. We won’t see much of that value.
