There’s a chance of frost here tomorrow night and the potatoes are beyond banking up any further, so the fleece is out. They recover from a light frosting but that set them back last year and these are more exposed #allotment

This week I’ve been popping to the allotment for half an hour or so before work to try to keep up with the sheer quantity of stuff that needs planting out now. Savoy cabbage, kale, chard and celeriac are now in. Tomatoes will go out this weekend - should be warm enough for them!

The #allotment is doing its thing 😀 The potatoes are through, and the new asparagus is putting up little fronds.

Now what is repeatedly pulling up the same two strawberry plants? I replanted them yesterday, not for the first time, and here we are again… Looks like I’ll be mulching and netting this morning. #allotment

I actually planted my potatoes on Good Friday this year. One of my potatoes was really a stone. Make of that what you will. #allotment (These are Charlotte. Also going in today were Red Duke of York and Casablanca. Picasso and Sarpo Mira to follow.)

I’ve had this #allotment plot for five years now and I’m heading into my sixth growing season. As a sign of my commitment I’ve decided to take it to the next level and plant an asparagus bed. Started preparing it today. Also sowed some peas.

I don’t have a greenhouse and I am banned from taking over the windowsills and kitchen table but the seeds are germinating well with this arrangement. Onions, leeks, chard and brassicas so far. #allotment

It’s getting autumnal at the #allotment but the kale is recovering well now it’s had some proper rain. I sowed next year’s sweet peas this morning, mostly because I like having something to look forward to.

A very curly bean on a dank October morning at the #allotment. I cycled up the access road to a Mexican wave of magpies and crows taking flight.

Fiiiiinally got back up to the #allotment today - stayed until the light went tidying, and came away with another box of raspberries(!), some cabbage and celeriac. Garlic is going well.

Yesterday I split the champagne rhubarb, and the Robin got a really good worm. I’m forcing the Victoria this year under the blue barrel #allotment

I hear from those as know that we’re in for another very dry growing season, so in addition to my usual chop and drop approach, I have mulched the raspberries with grass/weeds that have been composting in plastic sacks since the summer. Rather than binning the stuff that would grow if it went on the compost, I bag it up and leave it in the shed until it’s rotted down. #allotment
