netbird. I was looking at all the tools recently and discarded tailscale because it requires github/google account (or self hosting authentication provider or self hosting headscale). I’m logging into netbird with my email and it works great. It also easier to self host than headscale but I didn’t have time to set it up yet.

If you don’t use Firefox you want Google to control the entire web. Simple as that.

Why is everyone so confused about this? This is not about paying for electricity. It’s about infrastructure. Say you want to open a solar panel factory in Tennessee. You will need 5 MW of power. You go to the utility company and ask if they will be able to provide it. Turns out that they don’t have this capacity in your location and that they will have to add a substation or something. Who should pay for it? Usually the government does. The government supports development of industry and b...

I don’t get this meme template. Shouldn’t one of them be driving the other way? Still doesn’t really work. He’s sitting in passenger seat so they are facing the same way. She would drive past him, coming from behind so they wouldn’t really see each other unless one of them looked back. It should be like this, right? Now they are driving in the opposite directions and it makes sense.

So you’re saying Avatar had cultural impact because it made it to front page of lemmy this one time? Great point.

This sounds great. You still need a subscription to use it? I may be the thing that finally convinces me to get one.

1897 was a terrible year for gorilla jokes. Gorilla joke community was never the same after that.

Banks had an idea that our total solar eclipse is unique on a galactic scale and aliens for sure come to Earth to see it. So if you want to find aliens you have to monitor solar eclipse sites. I wonder is any government agency actually did it.

No idea why would they be more susceptible to scams. You think they would be more gullible? Or that they would be so confused about the ability to talk over phone? Smartphones for kids are security devices that let them communicate with parents so you would have to replace them with something, either dumbphones or smartwatches. Both would let them communicate with people over phone so it’s not like at 18 they would be exposed to something completely new. Still, laptops would be more complicat...

I’m talking about self hosting specifically. If you don’t need heavy CI/CD you’re basically just hosting a web UI on top of a git repo. It doesn’t have big requirements. You can just drop it on a cheap VPS. If you need CI/CD it gets complicated. Github and gitlab have limits on minutes. I imagine codeberg also have some limits. Github offers CI/CD on windows and mac for free but gitlab doesn’t for example. So you can pay for gitlab/github minutes, put something in cloud or even just run a dedica...

What might actually help: only show people content from groups and people that they follow, preferably in chronological order, rather than suggesting new groups and pages algorithmically all the time and thereby increasing the likelihood of children interacting with strangers on the Internet. You would simply have big groups like “I ❤️ New Mexico” where people will comment on the same posts and interact. If you would limit all the content including comments and likes to users someone personall...

I’m writing an app that I will distribute only through f-droid. The people I would like to share it with are typical, non-technical android users. Before those changes I could just send them a link to f-droid apk and explain it’s just another app store or send a link to the apk directly and probably most of them would be able to install it. Now I would have to tell them to do all those weird things first, things that look suspicious and that they would not understand the purpose of. I don’t thin...

It’s common for registration. Would be fun to have it for authentication as well. “My session expired. I need 3 days to log in again”.

They sell software that sits so deep in people’s stack that replacing it takes tons of effort. Companies calculate that it’s cheaper to keep paying Oracle than to rewrite crucial services.

AI’s don’t go crazy like that after 5 prompts. You need to spend weeks and weeks talking to them to corrupt the context so much that it stops following original guidelines. I wonder how does one do it? How do you spend weeks talking to AI? I had “discussions” with AI couple of times when testing it and it’s get really boring real soon. For me it doesn’t sound like a person at all. It’s just an algorithm with bunch of guardrails. What kind of person can think it actually has personality and engag...

It’s not that FairPhone can’t run it. It’s that Graphene OS team doesn’t want people to run it on other phones. Their reasoning is that if people run Graphene OS on less secure hardware and get hacked it will damage the brand.

it could be almost managable to use. That was my take away last time I tried Sailfish OS. It mostly worked but there were some issues that were just too hard to ignore. For me the problem with a phone is that it’s for short but very frequent interactions. When there’s friction it becomes very annoying very fast. I don’t want it to almost do everything, I need to do very specific things well.

So what? He’s still doing fine. Was he supposed to be in every blockbuster ever made? He also won an Oscar. Keanu didn’t. I don’t think that doing Matrix or Inception would have a big impact on his career.

My theory is that it’s because of everyone else what’s on the screen. Kids get laptops for school, get unrestricted access to internet because “it’s for school”, Youtube and Instragram do the rest.
