I spent a few days in Antwerp over Easter to explore the sixteenth century world of my ancestors, Corneille Le Sedt, textile dyer: https://awfulrigourswretchedpay.com/2026/04/11/corneille-le-sedt-belgian-textile-dyer/

One of my ancestor's names appears on more death certificates as the informant than any other. Esther Deighton remained unmarried for her whole life but appears to have spent it caring for others: https://awfulrigourswretchedpay.com/2026/04/01/esther-deighton-deaths-companion/

This weekend, I have been in London. I did a circular walk from Southwark to Fleet Street, through the Strand to Covent Garden, Leicester Square and Piccadilly, back to the National Gallery and then back to Southwark.

Can I have a rant about UI design? Years ago, I studied, and taught, this as an HND module. It seems that since this time, in the early noughties, we have thrown the usability rules out of the window. Yesterday, the new incarnation of the Met Office app was dropped on my phone, fancy graphics but I can't find anything. This morning, in my husband's car, we couldn't turn off the route planning app, still routing after a previous journey. To exit a route was 3 clicks away.

In this week's blog post I was thinking about my Nan. She was a lovely lady. I had a rough week last week so she came to mind. This photo was taken in 1921 when she was just 17 years old https://awfulrigourswretchedpay.com/2026/02/13/daisy-betts-nanny/

Why, oh why, oh why...is it so hard to share a video using MS Stream within your own organisation. It used to be one button!! Now they say "only in Classic Stream" . Grrr. Office 365, you have my hate tonight 🤬

This week's blog focuses on my Grandad who led an interesting, if quiet life. He died when I was quite young, but I have found out more about his life since https://awfulrigourswretchedpay.com/2026/02/20/albert-taylor-the-patients-friend/

I didn't post this last week. I love Cable Street the musical. It's off to New York next. A great story of fighting fascism in the East End: https://awfulrigourswretchedpay.com/2026/02/27/cable-street-the-musical-review/

This week's blog post is about my great granduncle. He and my great grandfather were from a disparate family of half-siblings. Unfortunately, my great grandmother died at a young age and her children had various fates. John seemed to have had less to do with my great grandfather as he grew up. I believe that my great grandfather was born in this house in Curtain Road, Shoreditch. https://awfulrigourswretchedpay.com/2026/03/13/john-thomas-english-carman-from-south-of-the-river/
