  @flpm so comes from log line which was a bit of tree log on a rope dropped into the water from a boat to see how fast it moved away as a way of measuring the speed of the boat - the measurements were recorded in a log book which was shortened to just log meaning a document of some sort with a set of recorded observations or measurements.
