@gearhead @caseynewton short sighted too. Becoming known as the go to place for nazis is bad for substack.

Was going to go to the gym, right up until I stepped outside and promptly fell on my ass in the snow. I’m stubborn, but fuck that.

It's been a while since I've actually logged into Gmail, holy crap it's slow now.

@emilygorcenski I’m excited for what happens once the hype wave passes and we find actual, useful use cases for this stuff. That’s always how AI hype waves go, we find genuine use cases for the technology, it’s just way short of what the boosters promised. (Video game AIs and generative dialog strike me as a rich area of opportunity).

@fthevenet @Ashton @hipsterelectron I would unironically consider your second sentence equal on the propganda scale as all but the most boosterish of GPT fans, only in the opposite direction. It’s fair to be cynical about how applicable or capable things like ML and LLMs are, lord knows I am, but the things being hawked as “AI” are more complex than three nested if statements. (Except when it’s just Mechanical Turk. But that’s fraud, not mere propaganda)

@fthevenet @Ashton @hipsterelectron I can see where you’re coming from, but “AI” has been applied to systems far short of AGI for nearly half a century at this point. Words change over time, and most of the people involved in chat GPT weren’t even born when “AI” became a broad umbrella term for this type of technology. I’m highly disinclined to blame current technologists for this usage when freaking MIT did the same back in the 1970s.
