Speaking as a non-expert and hypothesizing wildly:
We don’t have AI yet. We have marketing ”geniuses” who love to make false and misleading claims to boost their companies and their fortunes.
Are LLMs sentient? I can’t see how they could be, and I can’t see any way to get from an LLM to sentience.
I personally think we need something that works more like a nervous system to achieve AI. Importantly, it needs to interact with the real world and experience consequences from interacting with it to achieve intelligence. After that, it’s probably mostly a matter of scale - which in itself is not a small problem to solve.

@mikael@hachyderm.io Agree with all the points you have made. A few follow-up questions, if you will indulge me some more: 1. Re: real-world interaction. Is the unavailability of sensory inputs a (the only?) hurdle to sentience? 2. Re: the nervous system. Can an approximation be partially-achieved through simulated multi-modality? Kinda like a future-pilot learning on sims before taking to the skies? 3. Re: consequences. The current "training" also builds on consequences, right? Are those not applicable?
