The saga of DRM/DRI and “open” GPU drivers is one of those topics for which I wish I could hire a historian to write an extensive treatment. The primary sources of how we ended up here, mailing list discussions and the like, are probably mostly publicly available, but unless you were there, who has taken the time to understand how it all happened?
