@whitequark@social.treehouse.systems When you say 'from ports', are you compiling ports from source or using packages? If it's the latter, I'm surprised. Normally I can do a pkg ins in the same time it takes apt to fail because I've forgotten to do apt update before I run it and if doesn't have any cache invalidation mechanism, and then the runs are very fast. Are you using a slow package mirror?
