I had the same experience with cosmic. It was prone to crashes. I really like the idea of combining gnome with i3wm/hyprland though. I currently have one box using gnome with a tiling shell extension, but the issue there is extensions not being well supported between gnome versions.
I wouldn't be opposed to retrying cosmic now. It's been a few years.

Have you tried out O-tiling? It’s a fork of PopShell. I’ve been contributing some bugfixes. It’s been working very well on GNOME 50.

I’d definitely say try it again. It’s been rock solid for me for about a year. Definitely had stability issues when it was newer.
