@solarpunkpresents@climatejustice.social A lot of big corporations created software or libraries that are (now) open source and widely used. E.g. libraries originally from Google are in (nearly?) any browser. Some projects are nowadays even maintained by entirely different people than the original big corporation. I think anything open source and well-established/widely used is absolutely fine to use. Also the community is maintaining these projects and if a corporation is misbehaving, the repo is forked quickly and maintained by others.

  • @13reak@infosec.exchange Thanks for chiming in! I think this is a piece of knowledge that is probably pretty common and basic among tech-literate/internet-savvy folks but obscure to anyone who hasn't deliberately chased down (or had the chance to learn in a classroom about)/experienced the evolution of web architecture, how it has changed over time, and Free Open-Source Software alternatives. It is really good to talk about openly, especially given the fact that most of our corporate/tech monopolies have gone mask-off of late. Folks want to know what to do, and are anxious to do the right thing, but a lot aren't sure what are the best steps to take. Mobilizing and sharing community knowledge is an aim I'm hoping for this account. I know most people on Mastodon are fairly knowledgeable but I want to be careful never to assume, and take the burden of asking (perhaps obvious) questions that others may have but aren't comfortable asking directly.
