Fun fact: In 1977, in 1BSD, the #BSD people at UCB dared to imagine a world where people's #Unix home directories were not stored in the passwd account database. (Modern BSDs use master.passwd nowadays.) https://github.com/dspinellis/unix-history-repo/blob/BSD-1-Snapshot-Development/man6/sethome.6 https://github.com/dspinellis/unix-history-repo/blob/BSD-1-Snapshot-Development/man5/htmp.5 The idea that a terminal type was tied to a person seems quite odd at this remove. Also notice something almost never mentioned in discussion of the Unix manual system: when BSD began, manual sections were numbered in Roman numerals. This despite the admonition in the AT&T manual that manual sections were in Arabic numerals. It's little known today even the more widespread practice in the 20th century Unices of having letters after manual page section numbers (e.g. Illumos's 1b for user utilities in BSD flavours and System 5's 1m for administrative utilities). In 2BSD, everything was in section "(UCB)", with a .u extension for the roff sources. #ComputerHistory #retrocomputing #passwd #roff #ManualPages
