For a long time now, I’ve felt like I have very few memories and, as a result, feel detached from the past. This means that sometimes, I feel like a monster. For example, the loss of a place where I had good times, doesn’t affect me much. Even if its a place that shaped me or where I grew up. Thus, I’m often afraid I wouldn’t feel anything if people close to me were to pass away. I’ve realized that forming images in my head is very difficult. Imagining a landscape or a simple object takes me several seconds. There are no details, everything is foggy, and the slightest lapse in attention causes me to lose what I’ve imagined, forcing me to rebuild it all step by step. I describe every characteristic to myself : the position, the shape, the color, and the detail. Also, I have a pretty good academic memory but memorizing things by heart has always been difficult. Learning a poem? Hard. Remembering the lyrics to a song I’ve listened to dozens of times? Impossible. As I come to understand how my memory works, I find myself wondering more and more often whether my difficulty in constructing and recalling images, and therefore memories, is one of the causes of my apathy. I think I’ve developed a certain amount of empathy as I’ve grown up. But as a result, the only vivid emotions I feel are triggered by those of the people around me. Their experiences and words move me, mine don't. I'd be very interested to hear other people's thoughts on the connections between their memories, imagination, and emotions.
