I wondered what you meant by that, as obviously a TUI program cannot affect what fonts the terminal emulator that displays its output will use.
What this is is nvi not decoding UTF-8. That's an interesting difference betwen nvi in base and nvi in ports.
I just tried nvi on some other operating systems and they all have fileencoding="UTF-8" set.
That makes me wonder when and how nvi gained UTF-8 support, as one of those is nvi version 1 from 2007.
