How about this idea?
No matter what the context is:
There is a point in time when your real strength transforms into your traditional strength, that is one everyone including yourself assume you’ll always have. This works given enough Hybris and marketing. And when you realize that has become a problem, it’s too late.

That’s how empires fall. But it’s also how careers end. As an individual, you can hope it happens late enough that it doesn’t matter. As a company, you have to take the hit and course correct immediately.
