@Kensan_Oni@mastodon.social @vanellopemint@mastodon.art Ever read the Robert Silverberg story “Calintane Explains”? (1982)
His world of Majipoor is governed by four Powers, including the Coronal (king) who is the executive power, appointed by the Pontifex (high king, runs the bureaucracy, succeeds on the death of the previous Pontifex). The Lady of the Isle of Sleep provides spiritual comfort to the subjects via dreams, and is traditionally (but not invariably) the Coronal's mother.
In the story, Pontifex Arioc is tired of being Pontifex and of living underground. The Lady has died prematurely. He proclaims that he will henceforth be a woman and will immediately proceed to the Isle of Sleep to take up the duties of Lady of the Isle.
His word is law, and it is done.
