If you ever want to read a book that copies Tolkien (way more than even Dragonlance), I present to you "The Iron Tower" by Dennis McKiernan.
I read it long ago. I did not actually hate the book, but I can not say I liked it either.
I went and looked it up again on wikipedia, and here are some reviewer's quotes.
"Yet another abject Tolkien imitation. ... Derivative and dreadful." -- Kirkus
"So many of the little cultural details that brought The Lord of the Rings to life are missing here: McKiernan's songs and poems, for example, are pretty awful." -- E.S. Erkes
""The Iron Tower Trilogy is, in fact, The Lord of the Rings with the serial numbers filed off. Crudely. Anyone who possesses even a passing familiarity with Tolkien's masterwork should stand aghast at the 'similarities'" -- Black Gate

@randomwizard@social.vivaldi.net so to be honest, The Sword of Shannara too. But I don't blame the author, I blame the genre. Back in the days it was Tolkien or Howard/Leiber. Then someone "rediscovered" Moorcock.

@randomwizard@social.vivaldi.net I remember being OUTRAGED at this book as a teenager for how much of a blatant ripoff it was. I never read anything by McKiernan after.
