I understand that hosted stuff needs to keep the lights on and all, and having like a subscription that unlocks more stuff is fine, the thing is what the subscription is for 'usage limits' make sense, stuff like higher quality streaming, or being able to upload larger stuff takes up more resources. also makes sense things like extra qol tools for power users like video makers which are quite invested into the platform but then some platforms (say, discord or vrchat) also go and lock up a bunch of the social features - custom emojis, longer bio, or sharing images - which is just mean and especially manipulative on a social platform the point is interacting with people and socialising, but then the f2ps have less ways to express themselves and their identity, like a second class. and every social interaction is a reminder of what they're missing, when someone else gets to use a fancy reaction for a joke, or gets to share something in a conversation, or show more of their personality, just gets to have more of a presence, and you can't there's nudging people towards your subscription by offering actual additions to their experience, and then there's basically doing artificial social pressuring by locking up basic platform features
