Just read another (interesting! well written!) thing that framed itself as a one-and-only, ‘nobody tells you’ revelation. My dude, you can’t prove a negative, and just because *you* haven’t seen it said before, that doesn’t mean *I* can’t point to half a dozen antecedents off the top of my head.
I don’t expect everyone to have read everything. I *do* expect writers to consider that maybe they haven’t, instead of assuming that they are a lone genius on a mountaintop.

People say that academics are too cautious and hedge all their assertions about with qualifiers. But it’s really easy not to say, “I’m the first to…” “Nobody else says…” “We’re the only ones who…” You can just say the thing! It’s really easy! At least then you won’t accidentally foreground your ignorance and hubris instead of your insight or accomplishments.
