I just pirated this movie (illegally (against the law)), there's finally an acceptable cam of it. It's well made and hits all the correct emotional manipulation beats that modern movies do (the same way that made the Marvel movies successful). That's what people mean by "good."
It's Arrival but with a "cute" alien (not as cute as the one in Arrival of course) and a thousand times more reddit. The movie works because it's powered by the 🔵 engine and has Ryan Gosling in it who can make the usually annoying reddity stuff more tolerable.
Every genuinely emotionally effective scene between Ryan and the goofy rock alien is, according to the modern hollyqueird formula, undercut by an unnecessary joke so the audience doesn't have to feel uncomfortable having authentic emotions for too long. There is not a single thing unique in this movie that couldn't be done better in a better story. This movie is simply a more serious but not as good version of Galaxy Quest, or a less serious but also not as good version of Arrival. Also a more serious but not as good version of Earth Defender Mao-chan.
People are enjoying the movie because it is well made, emotionally manipulative, and has Ryan Gosling. Nothing more. Those are fine reasons to enjoy a movie, but by those exact factors it's still nothing special.
