X didn’t evolve. It degraded. What used to be a fast, high-signal platform for real-time information has turned into a noisy, unstable feed optimized for outrage, ego, and monetization hacks rather than insight or credibility. The core problem isn’t “free speech.” It’s collapsed incentives. On X today, the system actively rewards the worst behaviors: • Engagement farming over substance • Rage bait over analysis • Verification via payment instead of credibility • Loudness over accuracy The timeline no longer reflects relevance or expertise. It reflects who is most willing to provoke, oversimplify, or perform for the algorithm. Serious voices are buried under an avalanche of low-effort posts designed to trigger replies, not thought. Discovery is broken. Context is gone. Trust is eroded. The verification system—once a lightweight signal of authenticity—now functions as a paid amplification tool. That single change destroyed one of the platform’s most important social contracts: that visibility correlated, at least loosely, with legitimacy. Now it correlates with willingness to pay and play along. Worse, moderation feels arbitrary rather than principled. Not stricter, not looser—just inconsistent. That creates uncertainty, which is poison for professionals, analysts, journalists, and anyone who values predictability and reputational safety. And then there’s the product itself: • Unstable features pushed half-finished • UI changes that add friction instead of clarity • Metrics that encourage posting more, not posting better The result is a platform that feels hostile to thinking. X still has reach. It still has moments. But it no longer has coherence. It’s no longer a place to build ideas over time—only to throw takes into a churn and hope they survive the noise. Platforms don’t die when users leave. They die when serious users stop caring. That’s what’s happening now.
