Today, one of MIL's friends said "you're into computers, right?" Me: Every day for forty-five years. Them: Can you explain something. Why does my computer work fine for years and the everything moves around and I can't find anything? Me: Capitalism. Them: What? Me: Technology like beauty magazines and food packaging. They have to always change something to convince new people to buy it. So they shuffle things around, give it a new coat of pain, and claim it's new and improved but not bother actually making it better. Me: They want you to spend hundreds of dollars, or even thousands, for what effectively is a non-improvement or a slightly more powerful phone. Which is a harder sell if you don't pretend it's a drastic improvement by changing the appearance. The shuffling makes it harder to see how little you are getting. Them: How do you stop? Me: Stop buying the new toys. Repair what you can, buy with the intent of repairing, avoid companies that are always showing off the newest thing. Them: Like Samsung? I have a Samsung. Then we got to talking about how horrible Samsung and Apple are which led to me recommended Unauthorized Bread by Cory Doctorow and why I have a Fairphone and use KDE.
