Venus figurines are a cultural or religious mystery from the upper #palaeolithic. There are countless interpretations, so I wanted to explore and consider things from my POV as an ethnomusicologist with specialisms in cultural exchange and migration, who also loves #history and experimental #Archaeology. • We have 200+ known figurines exhibiting the thematic emphasised breasts, hips, sometimes vulva, with a fair majority seeming obese, pregnant or post-pregnancy, made from ivory, antler, bone, stone and clay, found across a huge area from the Pyrenees to South Siberia (around 7,500km), and dated from roughly 14,000 to 38,000 BP, that's a staggering 24,000 year period of anatomically modern human history across various Eurasian cultural eras.
