the above post was inspired by the beautiful and thorough footnotes in the book "nature at war: american environments and WWII", edited by Thomas Robertson, Richard P. Tucker, Nicholas B. Breyfogle, and Peter Mansoor.

@mk30 I'll accept either if all of academia settles on one citation system. By that, I mean one system can include both footnote and endnote options a la Chicago.

@mk30 footnotes for explictory notes and annotations. End notes for citations.

@mk30 The stupid part is with computerized typesetting, footnotes are a complete doddle. And yet, older typesetters managed them so well. Endnotes would have been simpler then, but footnotes were preferred. I don’t know why that changed.

@mk30 it annoys me that I haven’t seen any ebooks that are formatted for footnotes (maybe it’s impossible?). Plenty manage links to some other part of the book, but that’s a really slow process that disrupts my flow of reading on most ebook readers which are very underpowered.
