This article is maddening. First of all, there is confusion: Are platforms “falling silent,” or just playing melodies from JR’s library rather than distinctive this-station-only ones? It seems to be the latter. Secondly, it is obviously ridiculous to suggest that there is no way to make music play on a platform without the driver getting out to push a button. So the problem is almost certainly licensing costs. Why not just say so?!
