Yesterday I finished watching Berserk (1997), I liked most of it, but it does some questionable things. Disclaimer I haven't touched the manga. Some short thoughts: I'm impressed, Gainax got all that backlash for the midway changes in Evangelion and this got nothing? hats off to Miura. I think Berserk deserved way more backlash than Evangelion. Interesting that Berserk features angels that are clearly not angels, more like the opposite (demons/aliens/monsters), another way to look at it is, it repurposes Christian terms to give them negative connotations... very jewpanese. I'm aware Evangelion did it too, it didn't hit me until now, I guess getting redpilled doesn't make you reflect about everything of your past at once and realize these issues. That's why I've been/need¿ to go over content from my younger years. Which makes me wonder how much anime/manga content features this particular characteristic, because it's very specific. Where and when shit starts hitting the fan: Guts getting a temporary¿ (he discards it, no explanation) free OP sword from Zodd. No questions or explanations afterwards. What I consider the biggest issue, after the second Guts sword fight with Griffith, the author basically replaces Griffith character with something else without warning the reader/watcher, so the story can get to the eclipse ritual, what Griffith does after the sword fight is so out of character, so jarring, so retarded, I can't even (that why I mentioned the Evangelion backlash comparison). Finally, in a meta way, the way the anime ends with a cliff-hanger, I can imagine Miura at the time rubbing his hands and grinning "I'm sure you want know what happened, and what happens next right? You'll have to buy the manga, gottem!", I kneel. At least they let you know Guts survives (because of what happens in the first episode).
