@diegoe Free Software is the subversive act of eating away at the revenue streams of the tech oligarch. It is the act of foot-soldiers in a much larger war.

@diegoe in english, unfortunately "free" can mean two very important concept : that is not paid.that has freedom. Let's not forget this one. And, although free software without communist politics is just unpaid labor, it's not a reason to stop doing free software. Because free software (and free work in general), is labour freedom. Free from marketing impairments, free from shareholders interests, free from capitalist intentions. Volunteering is free labour. Self-management, self-government is free labour. Popular education is free labour. Activism is free labour. So what ? Do we need to wait for our governments to create an activist's salary or something before doing any activism ? no. Do we need to wait for communism before doing free software ? No. On the contrary, doing free software is activism. it's making an "already-there" of communism exist. We must convince free work is better than capitalist work before expecting people to find a way to earn an income that is not tied to someone else's will. Because, ultimately, the real problem is not that work is unpaid. The real problem is that the only two ways to make a living are either to sell your labour to a capital owner or to have enough capital to exploit the labour of others. The problem is that you need to find someone wiling to buy your labour to be able to live. The problem is that the right to live (represented by income) is blackmailed into exploitation by capitalists. The problem is that it is not possible to live outside of exploitation. So I would rephrase your take like this : Free software under capitalism is communist activism.

@diegoe Should be radical politics, because when the term "progressive" is used, it refers to a type of liberal who are still capitalist.

@diegoe I disagree. It's called "creative commons" for a reason. The concept of "commons" is one of the things people lost in early capitalism that forced them into labor. Commons meant that e.g. forests didn't belong to anyone and you could just take what you need. That meant a lot of freedom for peasants, especially women. With the destruction of the commons via enclosures, people were impoverished and forced to take up work, and women found fewer ways to be independent from patriarchy. Getting back commons can be anticapitalist and utopian in itself. Free software means every user has access to a feature without the need to pay and without the need to work for money to pay. So that's also why writing free softare is progressive politics.

  • @diegoe@mastodon.social This is definitely a trend I've been noticing in a lot of "new" open source spaces. A lot of these projects seem to want the aesthetics of open source but not the philosophy behind it.
