@pojntfx@mastodon.social @purpleidea@mastodon.social 1) yes. but: the revenue model that actually finances the future of f/oss will be cloud/subscription-based and *weirdly* the distinction between freie software and open source matters (a little) in that realm. not the language, but the intent: discourse is "open source" but i would argue it's not "free software" — they don't release their infra code and in 2026, that's 80% of the hard part. it's why SREs are paid twice what programmers are paid these days. it's why gnome owes so, so much to bart and av. it's why "a million tiny vertical saas companies" is a fantasy: robots don't build businesses or keep the lights on. i'm ignoring non-free licenses completely here. "open-ish" won't last (what was the last microsoft shared source license you saw in the wild?) ... but it is persistently annoying. 2) sooner or later, that elephant will eat enough to push everyone up against the wall. at that point, no one will pretend it's not there.
