The reason to teach kids cursive is the same as it's always been; we have way, way more brain wiring for sign language than we do for speech. Teaching how to write before teaching how to read is the traditional order because writing is, more or less, sign language. You want and need something tactile so your brain can exapt hominoid sign language wiring into literacy. Nothing to do with note-taking efficiency or adult effectiveness; everything to do with getting letters to stick in your brain.
