Everyone is screaming over the California age verification law, but that's like the least terrible version of this law. There are multiple threads full of people claiming that everyone who says that it's not the worst thing ever is a paid astroturfer, and it just feels absurd to see.

@brainblasted likewise, getting mad at Systemd for adding birth date as a user info field, despite the “Home phone” and “Room number” fields that have existed for half a century

@brainblasted I don't like the california law because I dislike the creeping mandatory surveillance in everything. It is however no where near as bad as the new york law that wants to mandate biometric or id based verification.

@brainblasted One particular thing about the California law, though, is that it appears to be illegal to enforce according to California district court precedent: https://www.eff.org/cases/bernstein-v-us-dept-justice
