@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange I don't think you're paying attention. Many proprietary versions of LLVM that deny the user's freedom exist. Examples include Apple's xcode, or ARM's compiler, AOOC, Nvidia CUDA, Qualcomm, Sony Playstation SDK, etc., etc.

  • @SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo And how does their existence harm me? And how does that harm compare to the benefit of a vibrant Free Software compiler ecosystem existing outside of the control of any of these parties? Oh, and several of the implementations that you list are not actually proprietary, they're just not merged upstream. Apple releases their LLVM versions. Not sure about Arm. I don't know who AOOC is. CUDA is proprietary. I'm not sure what Qualcomm is keeping proprietary, they contribute a lot upstream including the back end for their DSPs (and a load of generic VLIW infrastructure to support it). The stuff in the Playstation toolchains is normally upstreamed, the only thing I'm aware of that they've kept proprietary is the code to support dllimport / dllexport in ELF, which works with their modified FreeBSD rtld. They've offered to upstream both if anyone wants them.
