Last semester, I did a very basic introduction to digital research methods for religious studies. The idea was to learn a few basic tools and see what is possible in the space short before actually learning how to code. The course ended with a very small project students should carry out using a selection of the techniques they had learned. 1/

One of my favorite projects that came out of that course is a map of the global dispersion of Shahnama manuscripts, using the Cambridge collection IIIF as a data source, processing it using OpenRefine, and displaying it as a spatial network using Palladio. All data and tools are easily available, it’s just very light data processing, but the clever combination results in a meaningful visualization that teaches us something about the history and present of global cultural heritage. 2/2
