As a kid I was tormented by the daycare's insistence on serving us "pickled red beets." (Always the whole phrase, "pickled red beets," with the emphasis on the "red" for some reason.) I couldn't stand them. As an adult I have to wonder, how did serving beets to a cafeteria full of four year olds not look like a crime scene?
