So when my car flooded a bit and wouldn't start I took it to the place the insurance recommended. It had good reviews so I agreed. They quoted me more than I bought the car for, well over the "cash value" that insurance would have given me so they declared it totalled. I tried calling the repair place to explain the charges, they wouldn't. After the insurance claim was withdrawn I asked if I could just get a few things repaired. They said no. I took it to a new place. Insanely good vibes, great reviews and the owners seemed super trustworthy from what I could gather. Not only is it repairable and not totalled, it will cost 1/16th what the previous place charged.
