Just registered the caravan for taking it abroad. The registration number must be displayed at the back alongside the towing car's registration number. Apparently the trailer plate should look like this (screenshot from https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/trailer-registration-numbers-and-number-plates-inf291/trailer-registration-numbers-and-number-plates-inf291).
