compiled new reasons as to why you should hate systemd (with sources!) --- 1: accounts now have a field to state their users age, it lacks verification but sets a bad precedent going forward, providing a groundwork for other applications to ask a user for their age and have it impact their entire system ( https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/40954 ) 2: system v support has been completely removed from systemd, bringing risk to versions of linux that support systemd alongside other init systems ( https://systemd.io/INCOMPATIBILITIES ) 3: systemd now allows ai to be used within the systemd project, ai is being used to write as well as review code ( https://raw.githubusercontent.com/systemd/systemd/refs/heads/main/AGENTS.md ) --- if you want to avoid systemd and ai entirely, i would motion you in the direction of chimera linux ( https://gts.chimera-linux.org/@chimera/statuses/01KK78VSB4G5S75STYEY3YTR2H ) and gentoo ( https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Council/AI_policy ) i could mention other projects that have a hard stance against ai and arent reliant on systemd as well, but those are the ones i can actually vouch for myself as being definitively "not shit"

@det I'm a Gentoo user. I'm running with openrc. It's a ballache to get up and running, and it's now the only distro I'm completely comfortable running. You manage nearly everything. If you configure your own kernel, you get even more control. Portage is an incredibly powerful package manager. Just prepare for pain

@det I've never used Gentoo, and I'm already accustomed to systemD stuff. How well documented are the other init systems? Any books on them? And how much time should I spend distro-hopping from Arch to Gentoo? I have a fairly complex setup on my laptop with a good handful of applications including various from the AUR. I use a LUKS on LVM setup for almost everything (including the bootloader) and I use partially the TPM (for swap encryption) and also sbctl. I don't think I can distro-hop right now (university), maybe during winter holidays if we don't go vacationing. It's been like seven years since I last distro-hopped from Debian to Arch Linux.
