Watching this classic detective noir piece from 1946... the dame says, "I'll powder my nose," to go to the restroom. Of course that's a common expression I know, but it's funny to think of where it started. Let's see. REPLY: in the 18th century, referring to a time when people would refresh the powder on their wigs in a small room known as a powder room. It became a euphemism for women excusing themselves to use the bathroom or reapply makeup, allowing for discreet conversation away from men.
