@foxy 0) France. 1) 3 years, can be extended to 4 (don't know if they still pay you after the third year, but I assume no). 2) At least 9 ECTS of training are required to do the PhD defense. I didn't find any specification on how much the thesis is evaluated. 3) TAing is not mandatory, you can do a maximum of 64h and it's paid ~40€/h. Giving that the PhD salary is ~2k/mo, TAing is not necessary to make it for the end of the month, but it's a good round up.
